Happy Valentines Day (Three Hearts)

Three Hearts is a 14x22 inch Collage painting I did a few years ago. It consists of several kinds of paper including rice paper along with a photo of a spider. I also used gold leaf in it.
The hearts tell a story of love lost over jealousy and love refound. The broken heart oon the left is gone and now the yellow shy heart combines with the new heart in the center for long lasting love. the gold dragonflies represent hope.

Wolf in Winter Step2

In the second step of this painting I have started the background. The sky is cobalt blue with a light purple mixture added.
The birches have some of the same blue with raw umber and burnt sienna.
The wolf has had more burnt sienna and I have started some greys by using Windsor blue and or ultramarine blue in places over the browns mixing on the paper. I will also mix greys in the pallette.

Have you seen "The Grey"? starring Liam Neeson
It was very inspiring but also very scarey.
These large wolves appear to thrive for winter and can be fierce but are also beautiful.
I have started this 8x10 painting with an undercoat on the wolf of sienna and burnt umber. I plan to build up the layers of fur and have the brown mix with blue and red to give my greys.

This is a watercolor painting I have started on a greeting card. It is of a multicolored Macaw that I took a photo of during my recent visit to San Jaun, Puerto Rico. We visited "The Gallery Inn" which is a great place to visit and stay if you are able to stay there. I was on a cruise passing through but had to visit. The Owners are artists and even make their own pottery. The sculptures are wonderful and there is Art and beautiful birds free in the Inn and court yard. This guy was very friendly and posed well.

This is a watercolor painting i did several years ago of a house that is stone and looks like a castle.
I always loved the way it was decorated for Christmas with the toy soldiers lining the stairway.
I have been very busy the past couple of months with other projects so I decided to use it for my Christmas card this year.

Iris Step2 (see July's Post step 1)

I have just got back to working on this Iris Painting. You can look back to July on my blog to see Step 1.
Tonight I have gone over a lot of the lemon yellow under painting with various greens to start the foliage. I have used Hookers green and Perylene green as well as combining Hookers green and Lemon yellow on the palette before putting it to paper.
The Iris is painted using washes of alizarin , permanent rose and ultramarine blue in various combinations of concentrations.
I am now debating going in with ink or leaving pure watercolor. Stay Tuned!!
Coming up for locals to the Quispamsis area I am planning an Open house Art,Jewelry and Christmas decorations sale at my home Sat. Nov. 19th.
Still time to book those commissions for Christmas. What a great gift an original painting!! All I need is a good photo.

Tonight I have also carved my nieces Sam & Emma's Bengal Cat Lulu.
Unfortunately they live in Winnipeg so they will only see this post but I am sure they will be pleased with it.

She loved it so much she cried when I gave it to her as a surprise.
Unfortunately I was not able to capture his true beauty as each feather actually lets the light through where his wings and head have feathers.

Bella is another Nurse Allyson's dog. Bella is a short haired tan dog of mixed breed.
She has prim little ears that she holds proudly. she reminds me a bit of Scamp and Rascal who were dogs I had when my boys were little.

I carved this Puppy tonight for Carol Ann my Boss for Bosses week. It needs a light in it to fully appreciate it and for his eyes to show better. I was having a problem to photograph it that way though.

Collie Pumpkin

I did this Collie Pumpkin for my friend and administrative assistant at Extra Mural where I am a nurse.
Sue raises and shows Collies.My older sister also has a collie and my dog as a child and growing up was a Collie.
In the original photo behind the pumpkin you see the ears are not prominent so I did not think the first attempt looked right . I attempted tonight to make the ears more pronounced.
This was done with Faber -Castell Pitt Artist Pen Bold Indian Ink,Prismacolor Gold and Jiffy Art-Line 400 White acrylic Paint Marker.

My three birds on Pumpkins

I have started decorating my Pumpkins for Halloween. This year instead of the usual Black Crow I decided to do my own birds.
Spike,my male cocktail,Puffy my female Cocktail and Diego my Quaker Parrot.These were all done with a Pitt permanent Indian Ink bold Pen. The white is a white acrylic marker I have. The Green on Diego is the color of that Pumpkin. On Puffy I just used the ink lighter and burnished it with my finger for shading. I also used a Mr. Clean Magic erase to remove some Ink I did not want.

To finish off this painting I have added some evergreens in the background, Grasses in the lower right hand corner and enhanced the dark's in the bark.
Unfortunately this painting cannot be fully appreciated unless viewed in person.

In this step I started by adding a light wash of Cad.Yellow Orange to the tree trunks. I then made a gays in various values by mixing the cad. Yellow orange with my sky mixture.

Step one shows that I have sketched in the larger birch trees and then added masking to retain the white paper of the trees while I put on a thin wash of cobalt blue with a little ultramarine blue mixed in for the back ground sky.
I gently blotted the top third of the painting to keep the sky light.

Downy on a feeder

Since I love birds as much as flowers,I was delighted to find seven Downy woodpecker fledglings playing in McLeod's apple tree in their garden.
I thoroughly enjoyed photographing and watching them play and take turns at the feeder. I also was inspired by the turquoise metal chandelier that cast a shadow through the mess feeder. Since I still have this 5X7 painting as well I plan to deepen the colors in it.

The green and yellow women was made by my granddaughters mom Alison Murphy. Ali is a textile artist who does beautiful wall art with textiles.

This was my Pollock Fish. The Poster was an example of how they could be used as a scare crow. The owner would set them in the garden Hold onto the reins and be a scarecrow.

At Bloomin Artist (a fund raising activity for John Peters Humphrey Association that occurs every two years each artist is given the opportunity to have a a project that has been prepared by the organizing committee and put their own creative spin on it. In previous years we have been given, three carved wooden fish,a dowel and a stand(2009) ,A bird and a short dowel with a flat board(2007) and a birdhouse (2005).
This year we have this wooden female form.
Bloomin Artist will take place the weekend of July 23 & 24th in Hampton N.B. Various artists set up on location in gardens and spots around Hampton and paint or work with various mediums and then the works are sold in silent auctions that occur 2-3 times each day. There are also previously done works for sale with part going to the artist and the rest to JPH Association .
It is usually a great time.

The Iris

This painting of a purple Iris is done in soft Pastel on black Stonehedge paper.

I also did this painting a few years ago but would like to share it with my followers and wish all mothers a Happy Mothers Day.

I love working in Pastel and must get back at it. Although I am not as detailed I still like its empressionistic manner.

The other thing I love about Pastel is the brillant pure pigment you can put on the paper!!!!

Spike & Puffy

This is a watercolor painting I did a couple of years ago of my pet birds Spike and Puffy.

They are white faced Cockiteils. Spike is the male and he has the all white face while Puffy the female is dappled in color and her tail feathers are especially dappled.

Spike now looks more like a baby eagle.

They both have very destinct personalities. Spike can saw Hello which he does in the am, when the phone rings and when the door bell goes. Puffy does not speak but can make herself know.

Spike can also whistle "Pop goes the wheasle" which my husband taught him. He will often whisle it to Puffy, your feet or his favorite thing "the Phone book"

My birds are really beauty in my world. They helped me through cancer treatment and are always there for me with a special greeting. Pets are Gods gifts to us, like children they fulfill our lives!!!

I combined a photo of the shopfront with another shop that had the beautiful colorful peppers hanging outside it.

Skittles Family Step 1

This painting is from a photo I took of these georgous baby birds that were hatched by the same avian breeder that I got my cockiteils from.

I have called it Skittles Family as one of Erica's birds like these was called Skittles. You will see why as the painting progresses.

I have started with the drawing and added a couple of washes to both the sky and the ground.

I have used a salt technique to add texture to the ground.

Blue Mask finished

I have now finished "The Blue Mask" The final step was spraying it with two coats of Fixative.

I have added silver to the mask itself as well as the ornament on the right side of the mask where the feathers attach

The edges of the canvas have been painted with black acrylic.

This painting is certainly now mixed media!!!

I look forward to any comments or suggestions.

I hope to be able to use just watercolor on my next canvas but there certainly is a learning curve with the canvas as compared with 300 lb Arches coldpress paper.

This photo shows the background still wet where I have applied Turpnoid to the pastel.

I have also defined the plumage abit more.

When this dries I will add the finishing touches.

Princess Lily Grace

This is a watercolor painting of my granddaughter Lily Grace.

It is from a photo I took of her dressing up on her fourth birthday wearing a crown and earrings I had bought for her.

Dressing up and putting on makeup are things Lily really enjoys.

I have been working on this painting for a long time now but as I have stated before I often work on two or three paintings at a time. I am almost finished Blue Mask and I am painting some birds now as well.

If you look back in my blog you will see where I started this painting.

Lily will be Five on April 19th.

Now I have to start a painting of her little sister Molly Clair.

Blue Mask Step 6

I have now covered the back ground with pastel after the canvas had dried.

The Tooth worked very well to hold the pastel. I am certainly more pleased now with the depth of color and I feel it has brought the mask foreward.

In this step I have removed the masking I had applied to save the whites for the feather Plume.

You will now also see the wet film I have applied over the background. It is Golden Acrylic ground for pastel.

I have applied it to give tooth to my canvas to allow me to now use pastel over my watercolor as I did not like the texture of the background with just the watercolor.

In this step I have used Inktense to put in the decoration on the face of the mask. I have added another wash to the background and the table but I am very disappointed in this watercolor canvas and the way the paint lies on the surface.

I am now debating which way to go with this.

Do I opt for acrylic or pastel or scrap it all together. Stay tuned for the next step!!!

Daffodil For Relay for Life

The Daffodil is the Symbol of the Cancer Society. This is the tenth year of Relay for Life .
I am a cancer survivor and a supporter . Since I do not actively praticipate in the run I have done this Pastel painting for our team at Kennebecasis Extra Mural to help raise funds.
This Painting is 11x14 framed 16x20.
It was done on black stonehedge arcival paper.
I started with Mungvo semi hard pastels then used Unison,Snellier and Schmike pastels.
No Fixative was applied to let the brillant colors of the pigment to catch the light. Anyone interested please let me know . You canalso e-mail me at jocelynbichard@gmail.com

In Step three I have added more blue to the mask and now added a darker wash over the wall to help move the mask foreward.

I now have to mix up some greys for the feather Plume and smooth out the table top.

This is a collage I did a few years ago. It is called The Three Hearts.

It tells the story of a heart broken by jealousy,which is represented by the spider craweling away from the new mended heart.

The yellow heart which has flowers and dragonflies represents new love.

Blue Mask Step 2

In step 2 I have started filling in the background and the table top.

I am really finding it hard to cover and layer withoutmy brush marks showing.

Please keep watching to see how it progresses.

I am hopeing that I will be able to apply fixative to the canvas so that it does not need framed under glass.

Blue Mask Step 1

I started another Mask painting for my Mask Series.
This one I am calling Blue Mask.
It is another feminine mask from a photo I took in Venice.
This mask has a large white feather in it.
I first transfered my drawing onto Watercolor canvas which I am trying for the first time. I find the paint does not absorb as well as the 300 lb. cold press paper I usually use for watercolor.
I have masked out the feather tips and started the mask with cerulean and tourquise.

The Rose Finished

I have now put a wash of Perylene green over the back ground to darken it futher and to bring the rose forward.

The leaves have been finished with a few washes of hookers green and perylene green.

The veins in the leaves have been made using Inktense yellow pencil.

The petals have been scrubbed out more where the highlights were needed and I have darkened the shadows.

Hope you like it!!! I am now working on a Blue Mask on watercolor canvas and will post it in a few days.

Step 6 The Rose

In Step 6 there is futher defining of the petals. Beside another wash I have also started scrubbing out the highlights.
I have also introduced one more color for the leavesPerylene green which is a lovely dark green color.

To increase the pink in the rose I have now used a wash of Opera pink over some of the petals.
I have also worked some more on the leaves and started on a rose bud.

In Step 4 I have now done a wash on all the petals.

I mixed a purple for the shadows from the ultra marine blue and the alizeran.

In this step I put a futher wash of alizeran on some of the petals and a futher wash of Cad. yellow

In Step 2. I have put in a light wash of permenant alizerin .

I have started to distinguish the individual petals.

I had a was of lemon yellow under the leaves and used hookers green over it.

The Rose has been sketched onto watercolor board with an hb pencil done lightly.

Next I worked on the background to darken it with ultra marine blueand burnt umber.

The yellows I have used in the under painting are lemon and Cad Yellow.

Cindy's House Finished

I completed Cindy's house yesterday and took it to work for her today before I posted the finished product.

I double matted it with black then white matboard and she plans on getting a black frame for it.

She likes it very much and is excited to give it to her husband for his birthday next week.

Paintings make a great gift that you can actually share if you give it to family.

I do commissions on just about anything so let me know.

Tonight I have removed the masking,added more depth to the roof and siding. I now need to go back in and straighten some of my lines .I then have the second small tree at the corner of the house and some fine detailsto add.

In this step I have added more to the shrubs and now done the planters along with the first coat for the flowers. The house is starting to have some demension now and I will be removing the masking and straightening the lines on the architecture itself.

I will also put a coat of paint on the trees.

I ended up not just using watercolor but then used some white FW Acrylic Artist ink to accent the snow on the trees and ground.

It was good I did not have alot of time as I tend to put too much detail when I do.

This is step one of King St. East in Saint John. It is a winter scene that a friend of mine Al Gangon had taken a photo of our 1st snow fall on Nov.28th and gave me permission to use in a painting.

This painting will be 8"x17" so it does not perfectly fit my cameras format.

I am doing it to send to my oldest son Jason in Fort mcMurray to take to his girlfriend in Manila, Phillipines in Jan. for a gift.

I decided to post this painting I did a couple of years ago at a Richard Flynn Workshop as I was at my youngest son (Aaron's) house tonight helping him put plastic over his windows to prevent heat loss and he has this painting hanging in his dining room. I forgot that I really liked this pastel painting. I have not done pastel in awhile and it pulled at me to go at it again.

One of my other son s(Lee) just built shelves in my art room closet and now I am ready to paint again!!! I don,t mean the closet as I painted it last weekend. Not my favorite kind of painting!!! If only I can schedule in some time!!!!

Pumpkin Carving Contest at KV EMP

I wish to thank my newest twin sister Sue ( just became a beautiful red head and one of my patrons Monica Tomney (bought my Trevi Fountain Painting) for asking to be on my pumpkin carving team.

We had some tough competitation but pulled off the "Most Artistic Pumpkin Award,"with our alien pumpkin.

Who knew work could be so much fun!!!!!

Kingston Creek (Winterwonderland 3)

This is the fourth painting I have for Saint Davids Show. It is mixed media of watercolor and Pastel

I painted this before Christmas last year to put on my filing cabinet over my desk at work.

It is on 300lb. watercolor paper so I couldnot get it to stay on without a heavier tape so I brought it home . A few weeks ago I decided to fram it.

It is now cropped so the bush at the left is gone and the bottom half of the bush on the right is also covered with mat.

It measures 21X12 and is framed 31x22.

I do not really like winter but I love winter paintings.

Positano Shop front

This is another painting from my Mediterranean Moments.

I combined two photos here to include the beautiful hanging peppers and the enormous lemons with this awesome ceramic vase that was outside a shop front in Positanio which is a beautiful town on the Amalfi coast just a short distance from where I took the photo for the Amalfi Coast painting.

This town was wonderful !!! It was full of beauty. Both a joy to the eyes but also to the tongue. We sampled and bought some of their lemmoncello. A refreshing liquor served chilled in the daity little glasses.

This is one of my favorite paintingsbut I am now releasing it to the universe and truely hoping it will bring someone else joy.

Saint David's Art Show & Sale ( Oct. 22& 23)

Friday Evening 730-930pm and Saturday 10 am-5pm October 22&22. Saint Davids United Church 7 Gondola Point Road, Rothesay N.B. Will be holding its annual Art Show & Sale.

This year I am putting in two pieces from myMediterranean Moments collection , A winter scene and flowers.

This Painting is framed 18.5 X 21.. It is from a photo I took of the Amalfi coastline.

I took this photo while on a tour bus.. There are three buses ahead of us that are in the painting.

The roads are very narrow and when we met a bus comming in the other direction a couple of times their side mirrors almost touch. Beautiful countryside!!!!!!

This is the second opening/Gallery Hop that Klausen's Gallery on Prince William Street in Saint John , N.B. has featured our artist trading cards for sale.

This poster has four of my cards on it and the previous one had my cards on it as well.

This is a great opportunity for a collector to purchase small works and also makes original works available to the masses.

Klausen's also has clever unique frames available for these works. He has catalogues on site with works by saeveral artists.

This Wednesday the artists are getting together to trade cards amongst our selves and brainstorm ways to promote our art.

Betty's Dog Commission

Just did this small 5x7 painting for one of the nurses I work with. She wishes to give it to a friend whom used to own this dog before it died.

It is the third commission I have done for Betty.

I tried a new method with this painting by painting the background first and rubbing out the light areas while it was still wet.

I quite enjoyed this and like the effect it gave to the dogs fur.

Sewing Room Window WIP

Due to our rainy day this painting I started inside. I mean "inside" it is the view out the window in the upstairs sewing room of the Sherbrooke Jail.

I just have some highlights and shadows to add to this one.

The room contained a lovely spinning wheel as well as other interesting items but I had time restrants so they will have to be later paintings.

Will post these when they are finished as well as Lily's poitrait.

Sherbrooke Village View WIP

This is the second Painting I worked on however due to the rain on Wed. I was not able to finish it there and will complete it here at home. In the background is the schoolhouse where we met for demos and critiques.

Behind the school is the church that you can just see the steeple of.

There were many interesting subjects there but I wanted as much outside time as possible so I picked this scene.

August 9th-12th I took a watercolor workshop in N.S. at Sherbrooke Village which is a village restored like a museum of the 1800's.The worksop was given by Susan Patterson CSPW. Since we were scattered over the village there was not alot of one on one but I found some of her demos wonderful and I enjoyed it.When I first arrived at the house were we stayed there were several crows on this fence and I found the scene very peaceful. This scene was right outside the house where I stayed.

The house had actually belonged to Susan's grandmother before the government took it over as a heritage site.

This week was also a very stressful time for me as I was experiencing the death of a friendship for reasons I could not understand.

I guess the lone crow represents myselfand the fact that being an artist is really a solitary experience that can only be shared when the work is completed.

It was good to be pushed again to paint outside away from photos and my confort zone.

Gold Mask Finished

My Gold Mask is finally finished.
The final touch was a Swarovski crystal in the shape of a snowflake that I added to the center of the forehead.
It is clear in color but in this photo picked up the green from the background despite being glued on gold leaf.
Now to find my next Mask.

Princess Lily Grace WIP Step3

I have added some more color to her face but need to work on the eyes a lot more and put on her brows. This humid weather has made the drying time long.
I have just roughly filled in her hair and find a cartoon like quality to the painting at this point.
I have too hard of an edge on the right side of her face and I will be softening that.
Keep watching as I progress.
